Pardon the Interruption

Hello all. Sorry for the silence as of late. I hope that everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a happy Thanksgiving, and that those who do not had a happy Thursday.

I am working on setting up the store, making some new designs, and remaking a few favorites. I also have a commission I completed to post as well. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as I post some of my new work and finally bring the store online. If you see something you like, please feel free to contact me, either through the comments or by emailing me @geekfiregifts.com. I haven't found a proper contact form yet, so please use my name followed by @geekfiregifts.com. This isn't the best way to prevent spam, but it will help me out a lot.

Thank you all for stopping by. There will be more pictures, products and some other neat things coming soon.

First Convention: Survived!

Hello all, John here, as always.

The New York Comic Con / Anime Festival 2011 is over. And what a convention it was. Despite having visited conventions for years, I had no idea how much effort went into the production of such an event, especially for the artists. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it to see so many people. I really enjoyed meeting all the folks who were just wandering around, looking at the booths, and I especially enjoyed meeting those of you who were able to make your way there to see me specifically.

I am surprised at how smoothly the convention went; there was a lot of work, but all of the staff and attendees were incredibly kind, patient and wonderful. Especially those who stopped by the booth to see myself and my friend, with whom the booth was shared.

My thanks also go out to "John Rambo" and "Dark Syde Phil" for helping spread the word, and for visiting us, and to some of my friends who stopped by to keep us company and let us take trips to fulfill other necessary functions. And extra special thanks to those who helped us take down the booth at the end of the day on Sunday, and helped us load the car.

I met a variety of artists at the convention, and they were not only friendly, but very talented. I'll see if I can get their permission to link their art here.

As you can probably expect, I have not been able to work on any new candles since the convention, but I got some really good ideas. For that, I also thank you all.

I will be signing off for now, but I will get some more candles into production for the weekend.

I am also working on getting the store itself set up.

Have a good night,

John

The Convention Is Nigh!

Greetings!

I've been preparing a lot for the upcoming NYCC / NYAF, but I've taken a brief pause in my exertions to say hello and to answer a few questions.

Where will your booth be?

  • I am sharing a booth with a friend of mine from the Global Manga Initiative. He has built a rather imposing frame, which will certainly stand out. Look for a navy blue frame against the right-hand wall as you walk into the main entrance to Artists' Alley. If he has built it the way I am thinking, it will be near impossible to miss.

Will you be taking commissions or custom orders?

  • I would indeed like to take commissions. I have not yet worked out the logistics of doing so. I will update soon when I have that worked out. I will likely take e-mail addresses and desired designs at the convention this weekend, but not too many: I can only do so much at once!

Will candles be available on the site?

  • Yes. When this weekend's convention is over, I will list my remaining stock and new candles here. The format of this page will likely change to accommodate this. Stay tuned!

Will there be special candles at the convention?

  • Yes. There will be candles that I am selling in person that will not be available on the site. Do not worry, I will still have plenty here. And if you don't see something you would like, suggest it!

Also, here are a few of the candles that I just finished and will be bringing to the convention. I have some floral, fishy and faerie arrangements this time around. This will likely be my last post before the convention, but keep an eye out then and later. Have a good night!

Busy times now, exciting times ahead…

Hello all,

John here. I am incredibly busy getting ready for my first convention as an exhibitor / Artists' Alley member. I have been packing, preparing and planning for this weekend at the New York Comic Con and Anime Fest. I am going to catch up with some comments that I have missed thus far, rest assured. Tomorrow I will have more pictures, and I will answer some questions that I have been receiving.

Thank you all for stopping by, and I look forward to seeing you at the convention!

Is anyone thirsty?

Well, the weekend is here and it is time to kick back and relax. Well, I would certainly be doing so if I weren't preparing for next week's convention. For those of you with a bit more leisure time, please, do relax for me. Perhaps I could interest you in a drink?

Happy Sunday to everyone.

Hello all. Today was a pretty good day; I took some time off to see some friends and get thoroughly trounced in a wargame.

Today being a weekend day, and a Sunday no less, I thought I would show the first two candles I ever made. These will not be for sale, but I thought that some might find them interesting. This being said, they are the prototypes of prototypes. I would like to think that I have improved a little since then; I was not the greatest at aligning wicks. These are a different style from the kind that I have posted here so far. Those focus on color and patterns, while these have a little bit more concrete design.

I have always been a pretty big fan of Super Mario Bros., so...

Colors…

Well, I spent a good chunk of today working on setting another batch. I may be speaking too soon, but I think that it went well. This is one of the ones from today with which I am most happy. I have to wonder how this will look in a few weeks, after the colors begin to blend....

So, what exactly is going on here, anyway?

John here, and I think it is about time I actually post what this site is about.

I have tried my hand at several different kinds of arts and crafts, usually for birthday or holiday gifts, or sometimes just as a thank you. I think that it is fair to say that some gifts have gone over better than others. What struck me, though, was one year I decided to make something for each of my local friends and family, and this time they may have actually genuinely liked it.

I had been in the grocery store where I saw a book on candle-making. It was in the bargain bin, languishing amongst seasonal items and half open boxes. I picked it up, saw that it was less than ten dollars, tossed it in my shopping basket and moved on.

I got home, and immediately began reading through the book. There were a lot of ideas, and it was for some type of candle that I had not seen before. Intrigued, I began to experiment. This is the result of those experiments. From humble beginnings in a grocery store basket, this idea is now on a humble web site on the internet.

For the past few months, I have been strenuously working, trying new ideas, attempting to perfect old ones, and thankfully having a good time with it. And I am about ready to unveil my little project. This has been a labor of love, and a wonderful experience for me. Are the results terribly grand? Well, I will let the cold words of the anonymous internet answer that one, but I have enjoyed myself immensely.

Through this site and this blog, I will be posting pictures of some of what I have made over the last few months. This small series of posts will culminate in me holding a booth in this year's New York Comic-Con / New York Anime Festival's Artist Alley. Naturally, I will not be unveiling my favorite creations until then, but I hope that you like what you see. If you do, or if you don't, please tell me. I am eager to hear from you.

I will start off with a rather simple design that I enjoy.

Thank you all very much for reading, and please check back soon to see what is new!

John

Greetings.

Welcome to geekfiregifts.com. We are happy to meet you.

My name is John, and I am the creator of Geek Fire Gifts and all that you will find here.

At the moment however, "all that you will find here" is not much, I am afraid. All this is going to change. Slowly at first, but hopefully with increasing speed, this site will be filled with content.

And what sort of content? Well, that yet remains to be seen.

Check back here and you will find out. I will be posting teasers, information, and news about the Geek Fire Gifts project.

I hate to hold you in suspense, but all will be made clear.

John
